The Bluest Eye tells the story of Pecola Breedlove, a young African-American girl in Lorain, Ohio, who internalizes societal standards of beauty that devalue her own. She is relentlessly told she is "ugly" due to her dark skin and begins to desire blue eyes, believing they will bring her love and acceptance. This obsession leads to psychological trauma and ultimately, madness.
